Can Alexa Change the Color of the Light
Every Amazon Echo device has a color palette that changes depending on the state of the device itself.
You've probably seen your Echo Dot turn blue when you turn it on, or green if the connected smartphone receives a phone call. But, is there any way to manually change these colors?
Truth been told, there's isn't, not without affecting the state of the device. This means that if you want to change the colors, you have to perform different commands.
This article will explain what each color means and how to make them appear.
What's Behind the Echo Dot's Colors?
Amazon fixed the colors of your Echo Dot device to alert you of a particular situation or a device status. Tampering with these integrated lights would require immense tech expertise, therefore, it's better to leave it be.
However, it's good to know what each color represents, as it makes you more aware of the status of your device. There are seven different colors in Amazon Alexa.
- Blue – The default color which appears when you power on the device or turn on your wireless connection.
- Purple – This color appears if the device fails to connect to a Wi-Fi network. Also, you can manually activate it by setting the Echo Dot to a "Do Not Disturb" mode. Use the "Alexa, Do Not Disturb" command, and the device will turn purple.
- Orange – This is the setup color. It's steady when the device successfully connected to Wi-Fi. However, if it blinks or slides the device is still connecting.
- Red – This light means that the microphone is muted. Alexa won't hear you or register your commands. Use the "Mute microphone" button on the Echo Dot for the red color to appear.
- Yellow – The yellow color notifies you that you have a new message on your device.
- Green – When somebody calls you, the light ring will turn green.
- White – If you change the volume of your device, the lamp on the device will shine bright white.
If you really want to change the colors of your Echo Dot, you can do so by making your device react to the situations displayed above. On the other hand, this is just a temporary solution that doesn't solve the problem completely.
The Difference Between Pulsing and Solid Light
Now that you know the meaning of Echo Dot's different colors, you should know that some can be solid and pulsating, too.
In most cases, pulsating light of a certain color indicates a completely different state than the solid light of that color. Therefore, pay close attention to your light ring to see these differences.
Take blue, for example. A spinning blue light means that the device is just booting up, while a solid blue light means that the device is on and ready to listen. When you speak, you'll see the speaking pattern appearing on the light ring as you talk. This is Alexa registering your commands.
The same goes for green – a green light spinning on the light ring means that you're currently having a call. That's not the same as steady green light which means that the call is incoming.
If you don't see any light on your Echo Dot light ring, you shouldn't worry. This usually means that the device is in rest mode, awaiting your commands. It should revert back to its regular state as soon as you perform an "Alexa…" instruction.
Changing Colors Manually? Maybe in the Future
Since there's no good way to manually change the colors on your Echo Dot, you can only hope for a future update where this may be possible. However, as of now, there are no indications from Amazon that they're contemplating this feature.
If you really enjoy different colors on your Echo Dot, you can manually switch them to indicate a certain state. For example, if you want the light ring to appear read, just press the "Mute" button.
